Adele Live 2016 (titled as Adele Live 2017 for the shows in 2017) is the third concert tour by English recording artist Adele in support of her third studio album 25. It began on February 29, 2016 in Belfast, North Ireland at the SSE Arena and continued throughout Europe, North America, and Oceania.

It was initially scheduled to conclude on July 2, 2017 at Wembley Stadium in London, England; however, on June 30, Adele announced via social media that she had regretfully cancelled her final two performances upon medical advice due to vocal injuries.[1]

Background[]

Adele announced the Western European headlining dates on 26 November 2015. After tickets went on sale on December 4, many venues reported sell-outs, resulting in extra dates being added in multiple cities on the itinerary.

Tickets sold out nearly instantaneously, with promoters for Glasgow's SSE Hydro reporting tickets for the 13,000 venue sold out within two minutes. Due to the high demand, online queues were set up, which resulted in queues of over 50,000 people for venues only seating a quarter of that.

On December 14, 2015, Adele announced the North American leg of the tour. The leg included six nights at Madison Square Garden and eight nights at Staples Center. Adele broke Taylor Swift's five-show record for most consecutive sold-out shows at Staples Center. However, she didn't break Swift's lifetime record of 16 sold-out shows.

Ten million people tried to buy tickets to the North American leg of Adele's world tour. Only 750,000 tickets were available.

On March 18, 2016, Adele confirmed rumors that she would be headlining Glastonbury Festival 2016, on 25 June. She was the fourth solo female to perform a headline set at the festival, and the first on a Saturday. Adele confirmed the news live on stage at the O2 Arena, in London.

In July 2016, Pollstar released its 2016 Mid Year Special featuring the top-grossing tours of the year so far. Adele was announced as the sixth highest-grossing worldwide act of 2016 so far, with ticket sales of $75.9 million and 709,498 tickets sold from the 49 shows of the European leg of her tour.

The show at the Talking Stick Resort in Phoenix, Arizona on August 17 was cancelled due to illness[2] and rescheduled to November 21.[3]

On November 14, Adele confirmed via her social media that she had added five dates in Australia and that she would be performing in stadiums in order to accommodate the high demand for tickets.[4] Additionally, shows in New Zealand were announced on November 18, 2016.[5] Her first two shows in New Zealand sold out in record-breaking 23 minutes, and a third show was announced, with all tickets sold in under 30 minutes.

It was announced on November 23, 2016 that the tour would conclude with a two-night finale at Wembley Stadium in London, England on June 29 and July 1, 2017.[6] After both dates sold out, additional concerts were scheduled at the stadium for June 28 and July 2.[7] However, the final two dates were cancelled after Adele damaged her vocal cords, leaving it uncertain as to whether or not the shows would be rescheduled to later dates.

  • During a show in Belfast, Adele mentioned the possibility of debuting new material in the setlist towards the end of the show.[8]
  • "I Miss You" was omitted from the setlist during select dates during the European leg of the tour, and was only performed on select dates of the North American leg of the tour. However, on September 10, it was added back into the setlist.[9]
  • On May 7, during her show in Berlin, Adele confirmed that "Love in the Dark" would be added into the setlist at some point during the tour.[10] On May 25, she was heard performing "Love in the Dark" and "River Lea" during her soundcheck, implying that both songs would be added to the setlist soon.[11][12] On May 28, Adele performed "Love in the Dark" for the first time in Verona, Italy; despite previous indications that the song would be added to the setlist permanently, Adele revealed that her show in Verona would be the only time she performed it.[13]
  • On June 25, Adele headlined the Glastonbury Festival. The set lasted 90 minutes and differed from the rest of the tour. During her set, Adele performed "I'll Be Waiting" for the first time since her previous tour and debuted "River Lea" live for the first time. Additionally, Adele changed the arrangements of certain songs, including "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)," whose studio version was performed live for the first time (as the song was performed acoustically for most of the tour).[14] "I Miss You," "Million Years Ago," "Sweetest Devotion," "Chasing Pavements," and "All I Ask" were all omitted from the setlist entirely. Adele's dress also differed from the one that she wore during the rest of the tour.
  • During her shows in Denver on July 16 and 17, Adele cut "I Miss You," "Don't You Remember," and "All I Ask."[15][16] "All I Ask" has not been performed since.
  • On July 25, Adele began performing "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" with a full band rather than the acoustic version that had been performed during the majority of the tour.
  • Various alterations were made to the setlist during the Australian leg of the tour. Adele performed an extended version of "Hello" where the final chorus was performed twice, and concluded the show with "Someone Like You" in the encore. Additionally, she added "I'll Be Waiting" and "Take It All" to the setlist, while "Million Years Ago" was omitted.
