“Cry Your Heart Out” is a song by British singer-songwriter Adele, taken from her fourth studio album, 30. The song was written by Adele with Greg Kurstin[1] and details Adele’s depression following her divorce from Simon Konecki.
The song’s title was confirmed on November 1, 2021, when the album’s track listing was revealed online.[2] It was also printed on boxes of tissues in jest for fans at various listening parties for 30.[3]
Background and composition[]
“Cry Your Heart Out” was one of six songs Adele wrote with Greg Kurstin for 30, having previously worked with him extensively on 25. Kurstin also provides handclaps and plays the bass, guitar, mellotron, organ and piano on the studio version of the song.[4]
Lyrically, the song describes the depression that Adele experienced in the wake of her divorce from Simon Konecki. “What I like about [‘Cry Your Heart Out’] is, if you want to listen to the lyrics, it’s clear that it’s about depression,” she told Zane Lowe in an interview for Apple Music. “But if you don’t want to, it’s just like, a little … vibe.”[5]
The song has been described as having a “sarcastic Sixties vibe,” in the vein of fellow 30 tracks “I Drink Wine” and “Love Is a Game.”[6]
