"I Miss You" is a song recorded by Adele, taken from her third studio album, 25. The song was written by Adele with Paul Epworth, and appears as the third track on the album.[1]
Background[]
"I Miss You" was co-written by Adele and Paul Epworth, who previously worked with Adele on "Skyfall" and on various tracks on 21 (specifically "Rolling in the Deep," "He Won't Go," and "I'll Be Waiting").
Adele wrote the song one night lying in bed, unable to sleep.[2] Speaking to i-D about the song, Adele said, "It's about intimacy on every level. It's about sex, it's about arguing, one of the most intimate moments in my life. 'Cause you just blurt it out. It's a bit like, a drunk tongue is an honest one. That's definitely my motto, in life. That's why I don't really like drinking no more. The panic you get when you wake up the next morning."[3] She further expanded on the song's meaning with The New York Times:
“ | Whenever it's on, I always get hypnotized by the beat. That's just about the general intimacy of a relationship. It sounds very sexual, but it's not only sexual. It's about every aspect of intimacy in a relationship. It's just wanting everything! I want the good, the bad, the warts and all. I want the amazing.[4] | ” |
When asked what her boyfriend, Simon Konecki, thought of the song, she stated, "My man is loyal. My man is strong. So we spoke early on, and he said, 'Your writing isn't anything to do with me.' He's fine with it. And it takes a strong man, I think, to be like that."[2]
Live performances[]
Adele performed the song for the first time during her pre-Grammy concert at Wiltern on February 12, 2016.[5] It was then added to the setlist of the Adele Live 2016 tour, although it was cut from the setlist during select dates; it remained absent for the majority of the North American leg, although it was added back into the setlist on September 10 during a show in Philadelphia.[6]
