“Sweetest Devotion” is a song recorded by Adele, taken from her third studio album, 25. The song was written by Adele with Paul Epworth, who also produced it. It appears as the eleventh and final track on the album. “Sweetest Devotion” was written about Adele’s son Angelo and features his vocals in the song's intro and outro.
Background[]
Adele wrote “Sweetest Devotion” with Paul Epworth about her son, Angelo. It was one of two tracks they wrote together that made the final cut for the album, the other being “I Miss You.”
In an interview with Ari Shapiro of NPR, Adele opened up about the song, revealing:
“ | Yeah, I recorded [Angelo]. ‘I want to sit next to my mummy.’ You know, I was always looking for the feeling that he gives me, and I was looking for it everywhere in the wrong places, having no idea that I would find it in having a child. I thought I’d have a kid in my 30s, to be honest. And I think everyone thought I was crazy for having a baby when I did, but I feel like he was my little angel, and he came down to save me. And he did—he hit me like an explosion. It’s the most shocking thing when you have a child; you can't prepare yourself. It’s like, ‘Oh my God. What have I done?’ [1] | ” |
She further told USA Today, “The song is all about my kid. The way I’ve described it is that something much bigger has happened in my life. I love that my life is now about someone else.”[2]
Promotion and live performances[]
Prior to the release of 25, Adele partnered with Target to promote the album. Seven short music videos were filmed for different songs on the album in order to promote the Target deluxe edition, one of which was for “Sweetest Devotion.”[3] The video zooms in on a chandelier before panning downward to Adele, sitting cross-legged on the floor of a vacant room, singing an abridged version of the first verse, pre-chorus, and chorus.
Additionally, “Sweetest Devotion” was included in the setlist of the Adele Live 2016 tour.
