In a photo-finish, Adele's "21" narrowly withstands the challenge of Jason Mraz' "Love Is A Four Letter Word" to keep the U.K. album chart crown. On the singles survey, Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" bested Parlophone/EMI newcomer Conor Maynard's "Can't Say No" for a third week at the summit.

Of all the records "21" has set during its epic run, this week's is the least glorious, since it topped the new chart with sales last week of a mere 17,000, according to the Official Charts Company. That's the lowest total for a No. 1 U.K. album since the Levellers did it with 13,000 for "Zeitgeist" in 1995. Mraz's opening tally was also 17,000, finising just 44 copies below Adele's total. Mraz's last album "We Sing We Dance We Steal Things" peaked…

The U.K. pop group One Direction is aiming for a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 album chart next week with its first album, "Up All Night." However, Adele's "21" may block the quintet from the top with a return to No. 1. Presently, industry sources suggest "Up All Night" may sell around 160,000 to 170,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, March 18. However, Adele's "21" could sell right around the same amount. How the albums perform over the weekend will play a large part in their placing on the chart next week. Even if One Direction settles for a No. 2 bow, it will make history as the highest debut from U.K. group's first album. The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, March 21. …

The father of musical megastar Adele Adkins told of his torment over their rift days after she won a raft of Grammy Awards and paid a moving tribute to her mom.

Mark Evans, a plumber, walked out on Adele when she was two, leaving her 20-year-old mom Penny Adkins to raise her single-handedly.

Speaking at the Los Angeles ceremony last Sunday, the 23-year-old singer – who scooped six Grammys – said: “I just want to say mum, your girl did good!’”

But she made no mention of father Mark who was overcome with emotion watching his daughter on television thousands of miles away at his Bridgend home.

“When she sings, it’s so beautiful,” he said. “But it brings back too many memories.

    “It’s too painful.
