“Woman Like Me” is a song by British singer-songwriter Adele, taken from her fourth studio album, 30. The song was written by Adele with Inflo[1] and serves as the ninth track on the album. Its title was confirmed on November 1, 2021, when the album’s track listing was revealed online.[2]
Background and composition[]
Lyrically, “Woman Like Me” is a diss track that takes aim at a prospective lover whose insecurities and flaws ultimately hinder the relationship’s potential to progress. Upon the release of 30, Adele dismissed claims that “Woman Like Me” was written about her ex-husband, Simon Konecki. “I would never write a song like ‘Woman Like Me’ about my kid’s dad,” she told NPR. “It’s about someone I was thinking about dating who just did not step up. As if I’m gonna leave a marriage and then put up with your behavior, shut up!”[3]
She reiterated to Rolling Stone that it was conceived as a diss track toward someone she contemplated datiing after her divorce from Konecki. “Even though I’m directing all the things I’m saying at someone else, they’re also things I’ve learned on this journey,” she said. “The storyline of what I’m saying, I wouldn’t have been able to write before because it was something that I was experiencing myself.”[4]
Live performances[]
Adele performed “Woman Like Me” for the first time during a recording of her television special, An Audience with Adele, in November 2021; however, the song was one of three — along with “Chasing Pavements” and “When We Were Young” — to be cut from the special due to time constraints.[5] In July 2024, Adele was heard rehearsing “Woman Like Me” during a soundcheck for Adele in Munich, fueling speculation that it would be performed live for the first time during the 10-date residency..[6]
