“You’ll Never See Me Again” is a song written by Adele and Fraser T Smith for Adele’s sophomore album, 21. The song was produced by Smith.

Although ultimately cut from the final version of the album, “You’ll Never See Me Again” leaked in September 2014, alongside two other previously unreleased recordings from Adele’s sessions with Smith.

Background[]

“You’ll Never See Me Again” was one of three collaborations between Adele and Fraser T Smith for Adele’s sophomore effort, 21. Assumed to have been written about the same ex-boyfriend who inspired the majority of the record, the song was ultimately cut from 21. Some fans have speculated that elements of the song were incorporated into the sonically similar “Set Fire to the Rain,” Smith’s sole contribution to the album’s final cut.

Leak[]

On August 31, 2014, a snippet of the song leaked online.[1] It was the first new music from Adele since she released “Skyfall” in 2012. Some believed that the song would be included on her then-upcoming third studio album, however, it was later confirmed that it simply a 21 reject.

The following day, September 1, the entire song leaked onto the Internet, along with “Never Gonna Leave You” — another collaboration with Smith — and the previously unreleased demo of “Set Fire to the Rain.”[1] Prior to the leak, fans discovered a CD listed on Discogs titled Fraser T. Smith Sessions, which included all three leaked recordings.[2]

“You’ll Never See Me Again” only appears on Fraser T. Smith's BMI because Adele is incorrectly credited as “Adele Watkins” on it.[3]

Radio airplay[]

Despite never receiving an official release, “You’ll Never See Me Again” received some radio airplay in Greece and Arabia upon leaking in full.

Lyrics[]

In the darkness of my heart
Is a shadow of your face
From the deepest part of my regret
I hear the words I wish I’d said

At the dawning of the day
I can barely see the light
I make up memories in my head
They help to fill the emptiness you’ve left

I can’t drown in your tears
I won’t face your fears
I need to find my own

You’ll never see me again
I’ll be better in time
Let the waves take me under
I know I’ll survive
You’ll never see me again

At the dawning of the day
I can barely see the light
I make up memories in my head
They help to fill the emptiness you’ve left

I can’t drown in your tears
I won’t face your fears
I need to find my own

You’ll never see me again
I’ll be better in time
Let the waves take me under
I know I’ll survive

Let the floor beneath me fall
Let the sky come crashing down
Turn all my right to wrong
But after you life goes on
You’ll never see me again

I’ve been learning to live
Without you now
It’s taking all my strength
But I’m stronger now

You’ll never see me again
I’ll be better in time
Let the waves take me under
I know I’ll survive

Let the floor beneath me fall
Let the sky come crashing down
Turn all my right to wrong
But after you life goes on
You’ll never see me again

You’ll never see me again

You’ll never see me again
